Adrian was born in Ryde in 1949. He was the only son of town clerk Rodney and state-registered nurse Joan. He was the middle child of his parents, as he had two sisters, Judy and Mary.

Adrian Searle began his career in journalism at the Isle of Wight County Press. He moved to Stamford, Lincolnshire, to work on the Stamford Mercury. From there, he went to the sports desk of the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. In 1984, he returned to the island and took up the editorship of the Isle of Wight Weekly Post. He left full-time journalism in 1989 and started working as a freelancer, editing and subediting numerous titles as well as contributing articles, both locally and nationally.
Adrian published his first book, Seaview Pier: The Case History, in 1981, but his true success came in 1989 with Isle of Wight at War, 1939–1945, which is still counted among the ultimate references on the Isle of Wight in the Second World War. Following this, he released several other books, including A Century of Carnival 1888–1988 (1988), Pub Walks on the Isle of Wight (1993, with Diane Coppell), Isle of Wight Folklore (1998), The Quintinshill Conspiracy: The Shocking True Story Behind Britain’s Worst Rail Disaster (2013), The German Raid Airbrushed from History (2017), and The Infamous Sophie Dawes: New Light on the Queen of Chantilly (2020).
