Auckland Rapper Ermehn AKA Herman Joseph Loto Sakaria Died On Tuesday: Know More About his Life

The New Zealand hip hop community is mourning the loss of Auckland rapper Ermehn, who passed away on July 18th, 2023 at the age of 25.

Ermehn, whose real name was Herman Joseph Loto Sakaria, was considered one of the most promising up-and-coming rappers in the Auckland hip hop scene. He first made a name for himself in the early 2010s battle rapping in competitions like Smack Down Rumble. His raw talent and clever wordplay earned him the respect of his peers.

In 2015, Ermehn released his first full-length album titled “Coming Up” which featured gritty lyrics reflecting his urban South Auckland upbringing. Songs like “My Hood” and “Struggle” resonated with disaffected youth and Maori and Pasifika communities who identified with Ermehn’s message.

While Ermehn never achieved mainstream commercial success, he developed a cult following among true hip hop fans who appreciated his intricate rhyme schemes and storytelling. He collaborated with many other Auckland rappers over the years and was considered an elder statesman of the scene.

“His performances were like nothing I had ever seen before,” said fellow Auckland rapper Jayden Thompson. “He would have the entire crowd eating out of the palm of his hand within minutes.”

While the young rapper struggled with mental health and addiction issues in recent years, he had been actively working on new music and seemed to be turning a corner before his sudden death. His passing has shocked the New Zealand music industry.

“I always looked up to ermehn – he paved the way for so many of us,” said local artist Samantha Sivi. “His legacy will live on through those he inspired.”

A makeshift memorial of flowers and pictures has been erected by grieving fans outside his Auckland apartment. Online, supporters are posting old videos and photos alongside heartfelt tributes.

🕊️ The kiwi hip-hop legend has passed away. Ermehn was a former member of Otara Millionaires Club (OMC) and Radio Backstab, and was often referred to as the Godfather of South Auckland hip hop. He will be missed greatly.

Ermehn’s raw talent electrified Auckland’s emerging hip hop identity. The loss of such a beloved homegrown artist leaves a void in the city’s music scene. However, his iconic sound and rebellious attitude will continue influencing urban music and culture in Auckland for years to come.
