Damn. My pal Mojo Nixon died on the Outlaw Country Cruise over the weekend. Really sad news. Mojo was one of the great ones— I first saw him when I was a teenager, tearing up the college audience with Skid Roper in my hometown. Much later, when he became one of the stalwart radio personalities on SiriusXM, I went to his house for a radio interview. He did the whole thing wearing his boxer shorts. Ever since that day, I’ve always wanted to be a radio personality! Mojo was truly larger than life. It’s hard to imagine this planet without him.

I met Mojo Nixon, and his musical partner, Skid Roper, at Cutler’s Music in New Haven before a Pogues show at Toad’s in 1986. We talked for almost an hour, then he invited me into the show ahead of time where I met all the Pogues, and interviewed Jem Finer. He was a firecracker. Hilarious. Irreverent. And I still remember a singalong he curated while playing the “sonic love jug,” (an upended empty oversized plastic water bottle). I met him again many years later, and many years ago, at one of the first Americana festivals in Nashville. It’s amazing and gratifying that he forged a career with his wildman persona. The world is a little more tame this morning. RIP Mojo.
