Legendary Canadian Boxer Dave Hilton Sr. Dies at Age 83

MONTREAL – Dave Hilton Sr., the legendary Canadian boxer who held multiple world titles across three weight divisions during his illustrious professional career, has died at the age of 83.

Dave Hilton Sr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28th, 2023 at his home in Montreal surrounded by family, according to a statement from his son, former boxer Dave Hilton Jr. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Known for his aggressive, crowd-pleasing style and powerful left hook, Hilton Sr. was a boxing icon in Canada and one of the country’s most famous athletes during the 1960s and 70s. He first made a name for himself by winning a gold medal in the middleweight division at the 1955 Pan American Games when he was just 15 years old.

In 1958 he jumped into professional wrestling ring for first time, Dave Hilton Sr. steadily rose up the ranks, beating opponents like Joey Giardello, Dick Tiger and Nino Benvenuti over his 19-year career. He would ultimately hold world titles in the middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions before retiring in 1976 with a professional record of 65-16 with 52 knockouts.

“My father inspired generations of Canadian boxers with his determination and skill,” said Hilton Jr. “He loved the sport and its fans. Boxing in this country will never be the same without him.”

Beyond his success in the ring, Dave Hilton Sr. was also known as a mentor to up-and-coming fighters in Montreal, where a memorial service will be held next week. The boxing community has been expressing its sadness over his passing and gratitude for his contributions.

“This is a huge loss for the boxing world,” said Michel Tremblay, one of Hilton Sr.’s former proteges. “He was like a father figure to me. His legacy will live on through all the lives he touched.”
