Last night cancer took another friend- one who we will all remember as “The Baddest Man on the Planet” DJ Charlie Ramos.I still recall being a 7th grader at James Rutter Middle School and waiting up on the weekends to record Charlie spinning “in the mix” on FM 102. I’d carefully ‘tape’ his mixes on cassettes labeled with the handwritten words “Freestyle Jamz” and hope the other DJ didn’t talk over the song and ruin the flow. Unbeknownst to Charlie, back then his little sister Darlene would invite me and my childhood BFF Brenda Macasio Ruiz over after school. Upon arrival, we would stealthily maneuver into his DJ room and rummage through his album collections. As one of the most prominent and premier Filipino DJs worldwide, he had every jam to spark your soul and bring down the house with his beats. Despite a diagnosis of terminal cancer, Charlie continued to come out of retirement for special events, including my 45th birthday and my Florin High School 30 year reunion. There was no one who could bring South Sac to life with his ability to mix Too $hort & The Click with Lisa Lisa, Debbie Deb, and Stevie B in one genius mix. He was as much a warrior as he was a legend.Charlie, brother, you left us the ultimate mix tape—a gift that will bring our community together for many lifetimes to come. Your loss, however immense, will undoubtedly serve as a reminder to all of our loved ones to prioritize our health and get those routine check ups. Until we meet again, Let the Music Play.

Where do I even begin? DJ Charlie Ramos was truly one of a kind. An Turntablist , mixer, entertainer… and also a true friend, colleague, father, total family man, AND an awesome upstanding man! He lived his life on HIS terms, and always kept his folks and family together wherever he went. My last awesome memory with Charlie was having the difficult conversation of his treatments, his decision to CELEBRATE the remainder of his life in spite of it all, and here we are at @roshambeauxbar introducing the residency of his DAUGHTER @aleyahimani into the world as a DJ and producer with her all-female clique. His “proud papa” smile spoke volumes. I know you are in a better place Charlie, more no pain, no suffering, safe in the knowledge that your family is taken care of, as a good Girl-dad should. You left the world a better place than when you entered it, and that’s what counts…Rest In Power @djcharlieramos – I love you Brotha!!!

The obituary serves as a testament to Ramos’s enduring legacy – one that will continue to inspire future generations of musicians in Sacramento and beyond. As we remember DJ Charlie Ramos, we celebrate a life marked by passion, creativity, and an unwavering love for music. He will be truly missed.
