Who was George Magoha?
George Albert Omore Magoha was a Kenyan consultant surgeon, academic administrator, and technocrat. Born on July 2, 1965, Magoha served as a professor of surgery at Maseno University School of Medicine, in Kisumu County, western Kenya.
He was an alumnus of DR Livingstone Primary School and Starehe Boys Centre and School. He graduated from Strathmore College and the University of Lagos, Nigeria, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine.
From March 26, 2019, to October 27, 2022, Magoha was the Cabinet Secretary of Education in the Cabinet of Kenya. He was also the chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) from 2016 to 2019.
Before this, Magoha served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi from 2005 until 2015. He had also been a Professor of Surgery at the University of Nairobi’s College of Health Sciences. Magoha concurrently served as a Consultant Urologist at its medical facility.

Professor George Magoha died on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the Nairobi Hospital after a short illness. He was 71 at the time of his passing. The Nairobi hospital CEO James Nyamongo announced the tragic news of George Magoha’s death with the following statement:
“It is with great regret that we announce the sudden and untimely demise of Professor George Magoha this evening at The Nairobi Hospital.”
“Magoha collapsed at home and was rushed to the Nairobi Hospital A and E. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful,” he added.

Kenyan professor George Magoha died after suffering a cardiac arrest at around 5:30 PM on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. The cause of George Magoha’s death was confirmed by the Nairobi Hospital in its official statement.
The death of the highly respected personality comes just a few days after the death of his brother. George’s brother was also a professor and his burial was set for Saturday. He was extremely sad about the death of his brother as per the reports.
