Who was Janis Hunter Gaye?
Several of Marvin Gaye’s compositions were inspired by his second wife, Janis Hunter Gaye, a legendary figure in Motown. She enjoyed a successful career as a manager, stylist, and writer. Janis Hunter Gaye, introduced to Marvin during the recording of “Let’s Get It On,” was born on January 6, 1956. She is the daughter of Barbara Hunter and the musician, Slim Gaillard.
The singer-musician Slim Gaillard, whose songs included “Flat Foot Floogie (With a Floy Floy),” was the father of Hunter Gaye. She also oversaw Nona Gaye’s career as an actress and singer, who has appeared in two Matrix films and Ali and Crash.
Producer Ed Townsend introduced Marvin to Hunter Gaye during a 1973 recording session for his album “Let’s Get It On” at Hitsville West in Los Angeles. Gaye was 34, and Hunter Gaye was 17, and they were married.
Her family asserts that Hunter Gaye put together the renowned attire, which had a red watch cap, a beaded denim shirt, and silver red-laced platform boots, that Gaye wore during his iconic musical performance at the Oakland Coliseum in 1974.
The couple was married between 1977 and 1981. They later got divorced. He died three years after being shot by his father in Los Angeles. Her autobiography, After the Dance: My Life With Marvin Gaye, was published in 2015.
