What Happened to Matthew Mauger? Accident Explained
An alleged ute-surfing joyride turned tragic, killing a young guy in the southeast suburbs of Perth. The deadly event happened at the intersection of Park Road and South West Highway. According to police, Matthew Mauger was riding in the backseat of a grey Mazda B2600 utility vehicle near Byford after 5 o’clock on the South Western Highway. The 21-year-old was critically hurt and passed away on the spot.
Mauger was reportedly seated in the back tray area of the Mazda B2600 utility as it traveled along the South Western Highway near Park Road in Byford at around 5.15 p.m. on Friday, according to WA Police. When he fell out, he suffered grave injuries and was critically hurt, and the authorities say he passed away immediately.
Police are asking anyone with dash cam footage or who saw the crash to come forward.
How Did Matthew Mauger Die?
On Friday, January 7th, 2023, a 21-year-old guy named Matthew Mauger tragically died after the car he was in crashed at speeds exceeding the normal parameter.
In Perth’s southeast, a young man lost his life after falling from the tray of a UTE. It’s believed that Mauger was seated on a loose chair as the UTE turned a corner.

Friends of Mauger said it was the kind of send-off he would have wanted, placing flowers at the scene of his death and performing burnouts in their vehicles.
Additionally, Kate Nicholas established a GoFundMe account to assist his family in paying for the funeral, and the family has already received around $8,000 thus far, which is less than the $10,000 goal set for fundraising. Kate said Mauger would be missed by his neighborhood.
She added on the GoFundMe website, “Matthew was a wonderful boy, very courteous, a family guy, an inspiration to many, and loved his footy.

“Utterly at a loss for words, Matty Mauger will always remember our fun moments together; rest in peace, brother.”
Toby Grist, Mauger’s closest friend, claimed that the news of the young man’s untimely passing shocked Mauger’s friends.
“He was the greatest person I’ve ever known. To be honest, I’ll never be able to go past it.”
Sue Brenan commented,
“It’s very unfortunate because many people used to do this in the past, but sadly, it didn’t work for him. Condolences to everyone who knew him.”
Nix Woolfy: “Man, I’m very sorry for your loss; I can’t believe we used to all ride in the back of Utes back in the day. I assume that’s why they stopped it.”
