Who was Maxi Jazz?
Maxi Jazz, real name Maxwell Fraser born on 14 June 1957 Brixton, London, England was a British influential figure in the early days of rap and hip-hop. He established himself as a revolutionary rapper, songwriter, DJ, and singer across his celebrated career. Maxi jazz as a British electronic music artist was more widely recognized for his role as frontman of the band Faithless from 1995 to 2011, during which time their music brought a new level of electronic and dance vibrancy to the genre.
His captivating voice and beatific lyrics were often credited by audiences as essential facets of Faithless’ highly esteemed sound. When not holding singing duties in Faithless he lent his vocals to many solo endeavors as well as further collaborations with artists such as Boy George and Sinead O’Connor. After he left the band in 2011, Maxi was still revered by those who had taken an interest in his work, leaving behind an indelible legacy that has inspired future generations of musicians since.
Career Journey : Hip hop was born
In 1984, Jazz established The Soul Food Cafe System as his base before having discovered hip hop a year later. He subsequently debuted the sounds of hip hop on Reach FM London in 1985/6 “In the Soul Kitchen with DJ Maxi Jazz”. A subsequent move to LWR pirate radio station followed in 1987 and the following year, he experienced significant success when Tam Tam Records – Savage Records’ dance wing – picked up The Soul Food Cafe Band.
Subsequently, in 1992, Jazz founded his own independent label Namu Records to launch three EPs that resulted from his collaboration with The Soul Food Cafe Band. Live performances ensued for the likes of Jamiroquai; Soul II Soul; Galliano and Jason Rebello, which took place in Amsterdam; Barcelona; Switzerland, and Brazil, respectively. In 1996, Revco Records proudly released their first album “Original Groovejuice vol.1” through Namu Records.
How did Maxi Jazz Die?
The Faithless band announced the passing of Maxi Jazz in a Facebook post on Saturday saying “We are heartbroken to say Maxi Jazz died last night. He was a man who changed our lives in so many ways.”
The real cause of Maxi Jazz’s death is still not disclosed but he took his last breath peacefully in his sleep on 23 December 2022. We believe his funeral details will be announced soon.
