Whether we were on the same side of an issue, or not, Tamoria Jones was always down to chop it up or sit down over lunch to attempt to see eye to eye, and I’ve always respected that. She even donated to my campaign last year… even though I supported her boss’ opponent… twice. She was someone who understood and VALUED dissent. A principled policy wonk who wasn’t afraid to take the red bottoms off and step into the ring for the things she cared about. She was loyal to her boss, State Representative Harold Dutton, to the upteenth degree. While I often gave them a hard time, I always thought it was cool that she worked so hard to defend her boss. The photo of the dinner on the left was taken at Crisp by the old Party office at the infamous HBAD meeting where the final vote for officers was held by a “division of the house.” Some of my new friends that were recruited to buy a membership, get credentialed, and follow my lead, were ”baptized” on this night 😂 Afterward, the “cool kids” hung out in the private dining room at Crisp, and were cool again. It didn’t matter how you voted, raised your voice, or put your fanga in somebody’s face, we laughed about it over drinks, and all was well. Rest in Power, Tamoria. She could spar with the best of them! Always had receipts, and held her line… but was down to listen.

Tamoria Jones: May God give rest to your soul. Incredible talent. Darrick Wayne Eugene introduced us for a 1-hour lunch. 3 hours later, we were talking as if we’d known each other for years. She scrutinized AT LAST-The Urban Boarding Experience from every angle that her lived experience and career in the regulation of Texas education taught her she should. Clearly she wasn’t concerned about protecting my feelings about my baby, and—through candid & thoughtful discussion—moved from hopeful skeptic to determined supporter. I moved from wondering why Darrick spoke of her so highly to optimistic that Texas would have a person with her perspective, focus, commitment and ability at the center of educational policy for decades to come. I was genuinely excited about the work we spoke of doing together, and the instantaneous friendship and connection. It was not to be. I lift prayers of healing to the many, like Darrick, who knew her far better and for much longer. Tee was amazing. 🙏🏾❤️
