Anthony Scully Earl, professionally known as Tony Earl was born on April 12, 1936, in St. Ignace, Michigan. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1958 with a degree in political science. After graduation, he worked as a teacher in Nigeria with the Peace Corps. Upon his return to the United States, Earl attended the University of Wisconsin Law School and earned his law degree in 1969.
Earl began his political career in 1970 when he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. He served in the assembly until 1975 when he was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate. Earl served in the Senate until 1983 when he was elected governor of Wisconsin.
As governor, Earl was known for his commitment to social justice issues such as education, healthcare, and the environment. He championed policies to increase funding for public education, expand access to healthcare for low-income families, and protect the state’s natural resources. Earl also signed into law the first statewide ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation.

“Former governor Tony Earl passed away quietly this morning and the news breaks Kathy and mine’s hearts. Knowing the former governor Earl has been a great honor and privilege.”
