THE GREAT HUGH RUSSELL RIP.Truly saddened to learn of the death of ex-boxer and Irish News photographer, Hugh. I first came across Hugh as I watched his boxing career closely from his early days with Holy Family Boxing Club and then my personal acquaintance with him as he photographed many of our theatre productions. Being both Nth. Queen St. men, I only had to lift the phone and Hugh turned up at whatever mad location we had dreamt up for a cast photocall. It was great publicity for our shows when Hugh got some of those photographs on the front page of the Irish News. Our last contact was just last year when he gave us permission to use his famous fist-pumping photo of Gerry Conlon leaving the Old Bailey for our poster for IN THE NAME OF THE SON. A life well lived. Condolences to Hugh’s family. RIP.

A private ceremony will be held to celebrate Russell’s life, attended by his family, close friends, and members of the boxing community. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a local boxing club to support young talents in the sport he loved so dearly.
