It is with deep sorrow that we learn of the passing of Former Vice President Moody Awori on June 24, 2021. He will go down in history as a pioneer, who served under the government of Kenya for over 50 years, becoming the first person to serve two parliaments in successive terms during his political career.

The passing of former Vice President Moody Awori has been met with shock and sadness. Uncle Moody, as he was adoringly known to his family, friends, and constituents alike, had begun his career in politics in 1982 when he won the Funyula constituency seat.
He went on to be appointed as Vice President in 2003 following the untimely passing of Kijana Wamalwa before losing 2007 elections to Paul Otwoma. Despite this fact, Awori’s legacy will undoubtedly remain intact as a jovial soul who embodied an altruistic spirit. At the time of writing, his cause of death remains unknown but all that can be said is that we lost a beloved Kenyan hero upon his leaving us at the age 94 May he rest in peace.
Who was Moody Awori?
Arthur Moody Awori had a deep influence on the political sphere of Kenya, being named the 9th Vice President of Kenya from September 25, 2003 to January 9, 2008. He also documented his experience in politics with the release of “Riding a Tiger”, his autobiography. Born in Butere to Canon Jeremiah Awori and Mariamu Awori, Arthur was one of sixteen children bearing immense success across various fields including politics and medicine. His older brother Musa unfortunately succumbed to a snake bite at an early stage while another sibling WWW Awori was part of the Legislative Council in the 1950s. His younger brother Agrey Awori made international news when he placed third in the Ugandan presidential elections of 2001 while Mary Okelo is proudly known as the first female permanent secretary in East Africa.
