SAPS National Intervention Unit Shot Nkululeko Mkhize Dead

On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, the SAPS’ National Intervention Unit stormed a residential place in Zimbali Estate in Ballito, north of Durban, which belonged to prominent KZN businessman Nkululeko Mkhize.

The raid soon turned into a gunfight and gunshots were exchanged between the two groups. This resulted in the death of suspects present at the scene.

Zimbali Estate CEO Francois Schoeman released a statement confirming that he was aware of the incident.

“At 3 pm, teams from the SAPS national intervention and SAPS crime intelligence unit conducted a successful, prearranged operation within Zimbali Estate with the goal of apprehending a resident associated with an ongoing criminal case, the statement stated.

“Regrettably, during the operation, gunshots were exchanged, resulting in the death of suspects. However, the authorities were able to apprehend several other individuals involved,” the statement added.

KZN Police Confirmed the Killing of Nkululeko Mkhize

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the shooting and revealed that two suspects were fatally wounded in the shootout at Ballito.

“Six firearms and over a thousand rounds of ammunition were found at a scene of crime where two suspects were fatally wounded in a shoot-out with police at an estate in Ballito on Wednesday afternoon,” he said.

“Police officers from the KZN stability unit operationalized intelligence regarding the whereabouts of suspects who were alleged to have been linked with the killing of five people at a parking lot in the Richards Bay CBD on Tuesday morning,” he added.

He went on to state that the tactically astute police officers penetrated the residence and before they knew it, they found themselves under gunfire from the suspects.

Netshiunda concluded: “Police retaliated and at the end of the shoot-out, two suspects were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

“IPD were summoned to the scene for further investigation. Police investigations into the matter continue and a search for more possible suspects is ongoing.”

KZN police also claimed that taxi tycoon Nkululeko Mkhize had links with the drug cartel. He also had a reputation as a “tender mafia,” particularly in dealings with Transnet. This put Mkhize in KZN’s police’s hitlist of criminals. Ultimately, he was shot dead today.

Who was Nkululeko Mkhize?

Nkululeko Mkhize was a businessman from Richards Bay, north of KwaZulu-Natala. He was a taxi boss who recently rose to fame when he gifted over 1 million in cash at a traditional bridal shower of his fiancé known as “indishi” in Ulundi.

He was a graduate of Bachelor’s in Commerce from the University of KwaZulu-Natala. He later went on to work as a Project Manager in eThekwini Municipality. Eventually, Mkhize started his taxi business and earned immense success.
