After being roped in by the Steelers, Thornton played six consecutive NFL seasons for the “Pittsburgh Steelers” from 1977 to 1982. During his stint with the Steelers, Thornton won the Super Bowl champion title on two different occasions, in 1979 and 1980. After playing for the Steelers till 1982, he returned to professional football in 1984 by playing one season with the “Oklahoma Outlaws,” where he rushed for 288 yards on 101 carries.
