The skateboarding community is grieving the loss of professional skater Cody Carlin, who died tragically on July 4, 2023 at the age of 26.
Cody Carlin first made a name for himself as a skateboarding prodigy out of Hagerstown. He turned pro in 2011 at only 16 years old after getting sponsored by major skate brands like Plan B Skateboards, Venture Trucks, and DC Shoes. Known for his technical street skating skills, Carlin quickly rose to fame in the early 2020’s as one of the top coming skaters to watch.
Over his prolific career, Carlin stacked up some impressive skateboarding accolades. He earned the coveted cover of Thrasher Magazine in 2015. The next year he placed 5th at the prestigious Tampa Pro skateboarding competition. In 2017, Carlin won the Best Trick contest at the Munich Mash skate festival in Germany.
However, competitions were only part of Carlin’s legacy. He influenced countless skaters through his creative skate videos that he regularly posted on social media. His smooth style and ability to cleanly land difficult tricks inspired many younger skaters to push their own limits.
Tragically, Carlin’s life and career were cut short this month when he died in a fatal car accident in California. According to reports, Carlin was driving alone late at night when his vehicle suddenly veered off the road and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene from traumatic injuries suffered in the crash.
Investigators believe that speed and slick road conditions late that night may have played a factor in the accident, though an official cause is still under investigation. Carlin was just 26 years old at the time of his devastating passing.
The outpouring of grief from the skateboarding world demonstrates just how much of an impact Carlin had during his short but influential career. As a skater first sponsored at an incredibly young age, he grew up in front of skateboarding fans’ eyes. His death came as a major shock to those who had watched him evolve from a skateboarding prodigy into a leading figure in the sport.
Cody Carlin leaves behind a legacy of technical skill, creativity, and inspiration for future generations of skaters. Though his tragic death came much too soon, his influence and iconic skate footage will live on. Carlin will be remembered as one of the great young skateboarders taken from us far before his time.
